Sold quite alot of these in the past,Excellent engine if kept to service schedules very basic would liken it to an old tractor engine!In a leasure application you will never explore the the durability of the base motor. I have been out in a big Nelson with these engines, start up white smoke was simply grim and did not clear until thermostats had opened which the Volvo guy said was normal. My only concern would be the comment regarding service shedules.

There is a requirement for heat exchanger and charge air cooler servicing on hours only (1,000) in my experience regardless of hours good practice is to service heat exchangers/charge coolers every three years. Big engines attract high servicing costs and may have been avoided. Maintainence records are key, attempting to strip a gunged up charge air cooler could result in a big bill, even bigger if casing cracks in the process. What boat are they in, is it yours or a pre purchase enquiry? They are in a sealine T51,we have been looking to upgrade from our F43 to a T46, after looking at a couple of T46's and 47's,hard to justify the extra cost, we were then shown a T51,seem's a lot more boat for your money,shmbo liked the layout,but not shore about the extra expence that comes with a boat with engines this big,suposse I should have posted about the boat,but as our marina bill's us for a 47ft boat due to our rib overhang,was more concerned about engines cost's,having a second look soon so no doubt will need some more advice Thank's to all that replied to my post.
