You are correct when the generator get a back feed it will usually short out the rectifier. I have also seen a back feed burn out the stator.

I recommend taking the generator in for service. They will be able to ohm the stator and check all other components before giving you an estimate to repair the generator.

I would hate for you to replace the rectifier and find there is more wrong with it. Once the rectifier is replaced, the fields need to be flashed to get it working again. You can have it repaired by a Sears technician.
