B6 A4 Manual
Posted : admin On 30.01.2020Hi guys, I have a 2003 Audi A4 1.6 gasoline with a manual transmission and I want to change the oil in it since it has about 110.000 miles on it and don't know if it was ever changed. I don't want to spend money on original oil so I need to know the viscosity. On Febi parts online( ) I found that the viscosity is 75w80 with the norm G 052 911 A2, however after some research on other oil manufacturers like Motul, Valvoline, Castrol, Shell, Liqui Moly etc.
I found that they specify 75w90 as the viscosity. For Castrol I found that 75w90 Syntrax Transaxle it has the G 052 911 norm. I've researched the OEM bottles but it doesn't say the viscosity on them and from what I know Castrol was the OEM supplier for gear oil for Audi/VW group, see below links: Any ideas on this? I'm thinking on going with Castrol since the bottles are pretty much the same. Please or to join the conversation. I've seen that some that used Redline complained that the shifting is rougher than before, Royal Purple isn't available from where I am and about the fluid that eats the brass from the gearbox from what I've read this is because some use GL5 fluid instead of GL4. Castrol is a GL4+ fluid so it should be good, the norm G 052 911 is the correct norm since it specifies on the sticker, the A1/A2 at the end stands for the quantity like if it's 0.5 L or 1 L, so I should be good.
The Febi 75w80 is GL5 and I have some doubts in using it so that's why I'm asking to be sure. Thanks for the reply.

CASTROL SYNTRAX UNIVERSAL PLUS 75W-90 (Global Product) Fully synthetic automotive gear oil, recommended for vehicles with manual transaxles that combine gearbox and hypoid differentials; eg. Toyota Celica 4WD, Subaru, Porsche and Alfa Romeo.
Recommended for use in manual transmission where 75W-90 GL-4 or 5 lubricants are recommended. Suitable for rear axles of light cars and secondary drive axles of 4WD vehicles for reduced viscous drag and enhanced fuel efficiency, especially for around town service.

Full synthetic, multipurpose manual transmission and final drive lubricant. May be used in synchronized manual transmissions and final drives/differentials of a wide range of vehicles (commercial vehicle, construction equipment, passenger cars) where API GL-4 or GL-5 are required. The product also carries a number of European HD approvals. I've read that some that used Motul hear metal noises from the gearbox. Mine has a FWD not AWD. Read that some used Valvoline Maxlife and had no issues, but in the end I've gone with Castrol 75w90 and will change the oil soon. Will let you know how it goes since I'm curious myself to see how it compares to the old oil and if it has metal pieces in it - hope not.

In case the gearbox still doesn't shift as good as I want it I may go with a thinner oil like 75w80, but I hope that won't be the case. Thank you all for the replies.
